THE SMART BITE: ROOTED IN FAITH
Welcome to the very first issue of The Smart Bite: Rooted in Faith. This is the same whole foods encouragement you know, with space to notice God’s goodness woven through it. I’m so glad you’re here.
Let’s Talk Berries
Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, picking blackberries was a part of every summer. They grew wild and free, and we ate them by the handful without a second thought. Now I think about it every time I reach for a container of organic blackberries at the store, and I realize what a treat those summers really were.
Here is something worth knowing as the days get longer. There is real, scientific benefit to finding joy in your summer memories, spending more time outdoors, moving your body, and doing it all with the people you love. The season is practically handing you the things tied to a longer, healthier life.
So, let’s lean into one of the best parts. Let’s talk berries.
Did you know a berry protects itself? Those deep pigments guard it from sun and stress, and the same antioxidants nourish us in return. God builds protection right into the fruit and tends to us the same way.
WHY BERRIES
A few reasons to reach for them all summer:
High in fiber, which supports digestion, steady energy, and staying full longer.
Loaded with antioxidants. Those blue, red, and purple pigments are plant compounds linked to a sharper memory and a healthier heart.
Rich in vitamin C and other nutrients your body loves.
Among the lowest in sugar and highest in fiber of any fruit, with a lot of water packed in too.
Tied to healthy aging in study after study. Few foods are this well researched and this delicious.
YOUR SMALL STEP
Add a handful of berries to one thing you already eat each day this week.
Your morning oats, chia pudding, your afternoon yogurt, an icy smoothie. No new habit to build, no recipe required. Just a little more color and variety on what you already reach for.
Go Deeper
Berries are one of the most studied foods for healthy aging, linked to sharper memory and a healthier heart.
The science is genuinely exciting.
Pigs Tips
A few easy ways to enjoy more berries this week:
- Frozen counts, and it saves you money. Frozen organic berries are almost always cheaper than fresh, picked at peak ripeness, and they last for months.
- Prioritize organic when you can. Berries are on the Dirty Dozen (the produce with the most pesticide residue), so this is a good one to buy organic. Frozen organic is an easy way to do both.
- Let them be dessert. Berries with a little dark chocolate or a spoonful of nut butter is a sweet ending that loves you back.

Overnight Chia Pudding with Cacao
Make it tonight, wake up to it tomorrow. It sets while you sleep into something rich and chocolatey, and in summer it practically begs for a pile of fresh berries on top. Cool, simple, and ready when you are.
PIGS’ SCRIPTURE AND SMILES
Every good and perfect gift is from above.
James 1:17a
